Hot Dogs-Childhood Favorite With A Real Food Twist

Hey everyone! I hope you all are getting out and enjoying some sunny weather. We’ve been having a lot of rain here for the last several weeks so I was glad when the sun finally peeked out today. Hopefully things will start to dry out now! Today I want to talk about a classic…hot dogs.

Why I love Hot Dogs

Hot dogs can have a really bad reputation and not qualify as a “real food”. Luckily for those of us that love our hot dogs, there are many healthy options to choose from today. Although we usually enjoy these as a good camping treat, I love that I can still enjoy a hot dog over the fire! Plus they are great on a grill as well!

Choosing a Bun for Your Hot Dogs

No matter what type of hot dog you choose for your real food camping, how you eat the dog is important. Depending on your dietary choices a whole grain organic hotdog bun might be the best choice for you. At our campsite we don’t usually have regular hot dog buns since we eat a fairly low carb diet and I’m 100% gluten free. We’ve had to get a little creative with our bun choices. Many in my family love a gluten free or low carb tortilla to wrap their hot dogs in.

My personal favorite bun alternative is a more nutrient dense approach…romaine lettuce. Romaine lettuce is already in the shape of a bun which makes it the perfect choice for your real food hot dog dinner. The crunch is totally different than a hot dog bun so I don’t feel like I’m trying to copy a flavor or texture and falling short. Romaine is low calorie, low carb, gluten free and a great way to get your veggies in plus they hold all the hotdog fixings. Add a bit of ketchup, mustard, and onion to your hot dogs and they’re perfect

A Perfect Simple Meal

We kept it simple this evening with some chopped cauliflower for our side. This made it easy to set out and take care of. A win-win for camping in my book. A great thing about cauliflower is that it also holds the romaine leaves in place while I top them!

Happy Camping!
